Whitening toothpaste from the fläsh CARE & REPAIR range with a coconut and salt flavour. Contains hydroxyapatite (HAp), which helps strengthen and protect tooth enamel.

Why hydroxyapatite (HAp)?

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a naturally occurring mineral already found in teeth. It makes up approximately 97% of tooth enamel and 70% of dentine.

When added to toothpaste, often as nano- or micro-hydroxyapatite, it acts as a biocompatible building block that binds to the tooth surface and helps protect and strengthen teeth.

Key benefits

Helps rebuild enamel (remineralisation)

Acids from food and bacteria can dissolve minerals in tooth enamel. Hydroxyapatite supports remineralisation by supplying minerals to areas showing early signs of mineral loss, helping strengthen the enamel surface.

Relieves tooth sensitivity

When gums recede or enamel wears down, microscopic channels in the dentine (dentinal tubules) can become exposed. Hydroxyapatite can help seal these channels, reducing sensitivity to heat, cold and acids.

A fluoride-free alternative for cavity prevention

Clinical studies show that toothpaste containing hydroxyapatite can help prevent tooth decay. Some studies have demonstrated a preventive effect comparable to fluoride toothpaste. Hydroxyapatite is a biocompatible mineral and may be relevant for people seeking a fluoride-free alternative.

Smoother, naturally brighter teeth

Hydroxyapatite can fill microscopic irregularities on the tooth surface, creating a smoother finish. This can give teeth a natural shine and reduce the likelihood of stains adhering to the surface.

Helps reduce plaque and bacterial adhesion

A smoother tooth surface can make it more difficult for bacteria to attach. Hydroxyapatite can also interact with bacteria in the mouth, helping reduce bacterial adhesion.

Hydroxyapatite vs. fluoride

Property Hydroxyapatite (HAp) Fluoride
How it works Helps restore the mineral content of the enamel surface. Promotes remineralisation and increases enamel resistance to acids.
Safety if swallowed A biocompatible mineral with a generally favourable safety profile. Should be used in recommended amounts, particularly in children.
Tooth sensitivity Can reduce sensitivity by sealing exposed dentinal tubules. Certain fluoride compounds can also reduce tooth sensitivity.
